Comments:

The war on drugs has become a war on our fellow citizens. As someone who works in mental health, I know firsthand how positive treatment can be as opposed to incarceration. We have to change the way we approach marijuana in Idaho. Marijuana should become fully legal for recreational and medical use in Idaho. I would support this being done as either a ballot initiative or as a piece of legislation.

I say yes to everything but want to make sure as a state we tackle the hard parts like education and support that come with this change. I truly feel this needs to start at the federal level but may be dead before that happens. There are too many young people in prison over this issue.

(Do you support the End of the War on Drugs?) As a retired teacher, I read this and believe the wording of this question is too simple to cover a complex and emotional issue.  Therefore I decline to give it an answer.

Comment:  I believe Cannabis reform is long overdue in our state. The regulation of commercial cannabis could be a helpful source of monies for state government and help with funding rehabilitation for Idahoans with real substance abuse issues. The cultivation of hemp would be an excellent addition to our current agricultural exports as well as a resource to create in-state peripheral jobs.

Comments:

Cannabis is a medicinal plant that was used for hundreds of years by Americans prior to its criminalization. I believe that using such a natural, easily growable remedy is a natural step in destabilizing corrupt pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies. Much emphasis has been placed on the ambiguity of marijuana testing within the criminal justice system, but any reckless minor infraction can be cited outside the context of drug related crime and major infractions can be confirmed through other methods.

Comments:

For questions 1 and 6, I responded not sure because I'd want to gather more information and have specific proposals to review before I made a decision. However, I think these are issues that should be reviewed and discussed by Idaho's Legislature.

I am not necessarily opposed to recreational marijuana, however, I think it makes more sense to legalize recreational marijuana at the federal level. I think having varying state regulations creates a law  enforcement nightmare -- especially when we reach the point we have in Idaho where so many of our neighboring states have legalized recreational and/or medical marijuana. If elected to the Legislature, I wouldn't hesitate to support medical marijuana, CBD and industrial hemp at all. However, with regard to recreational marijuana, I'd want to gather information from states that have already legalized recreational marijuana to learn from their experiences before crafting legislation for Idaho. I'd also want to learn more about "the war on drugs" and what the specifics and implications of a proposal to "end" it  would be.

Comments:

I believe that prohibition is not an appropriate solution and it has placed an unnecessary burden on our prison system. We need to start seriously considering cannabis reform and discussing what sort of changes to current law should be made. There are many benefits to be gained and by looking at other states and gathering more information, we can find which policies are working well and begin to implement them.

Comments:

This year I caused to be introduced and heard in the House Judiciary and Rules Committee the first marijuana infraction bill ever heard. The charge remained a misdemeanor but it became an infraction if the defendant performed 8 hours of community service or paid a $250 fine and went to 4 hours of drug courses.  Its  not clean but it was the best I could get to be introduced. Only applies to 1/2 ounce or less. I voted for the CBD oil bills both times.  I think medical marijuana is something we could do.  I am definitely opposed to ending the War on Drugs. I have seen too many seriously negative consequences to the the use of Meth, Heroin and related drugs. I have seen a childhood friend lose his mind.  I have seen a constituent run over by a car driving by a man who was high on Meth, and I have seen a dozen people ruined by this drug - and families suffer.  I do not support legalization of marijuana.  Let the voters decide.
